Laser Skin Resurfacing New York

General information:

Laser skin resurfacing is a proven safe method of treating various skin disorders, and has been used in medical community since the early 1960’s. Laser skin resurfacing is used in the in the fields of dermatology and plastic surgery. Laser skin resurfacing has been efficacious in the areas of dermabrasion, spider veins, brown spots, rosacea, and hair removal.

Laser skin resurfacing treatment works by generating beams of light onto a specific site of the body. The light is absorbed by the red blood cells that carry oxygen and the melanin, and causes the destruction of unwanted cells and leaves the healthy cells in the body. This is all done without breaking the surface of the dermis or top layer of the skin. Some of the unwanted skin disorders are created when vascular legions are formed by having too many blood vessels in the epidermal layers of the skin. Spider veins are the most common type of vascular legions. Pigmented legions are created when the melanin in the skin has too many melanocytes. When the pigment multiplies it causes freckles, brown age spots, and moles.

The treatment of dermabrasion is one skin disorder where lasers are effective. The most important element in dermabrasion is recognition of the appropriate depth of treatment. The skin is composed of 2 mutually dependent layers, the epidermis and the dermis, which rest on a fatty subcutaneous layer. The epidermis contains no blood vessels and protects the underlying dermis from the external elements. The epidermis is entirely dependent on the underlying dermis to deliver nutrients and to remove waste by means of diffusion across the dermo-epidermal junction. The primary function of the dermis is to sustain and support the epidermis. The procedure may also be referred to as laser skin rejuvenation because of its anti-aging benefits, or laser peel because the damaged layers of skin are peeled away.

After the laser skin resurfacing procedure the epidermis then regenerates from the epidermal appendages located in the remaining dermis. This process begins within 24 hours after treatment and is often complete after 7-10 days.

Melanin is what gives our skin its color. Pigmented lesions are dark in color simply because melanin is abnormally concentrated in one area of the skin. High concentrations of melanin can be due to various factors. Some types are present at birth, but most occur with age or as a result of overexposure to the sun’s damaging rays.

Lentigenies or age spots are premature aging brown marks, which appear on the backs of hands and the face. Sunburn freckles are the result of sun damage and occur on the back, upper chest and shoulders. Most are harmless but all are signs of aging and may be unattractive.

Can laser treatments eliminate sun damage, freckles and brown spots as well?

In treatments for laser brown spot removal can eliminate some of the smaller spots and legions on the face and neck. Freckles and age spots are usually brown in color and can cause embarrassment and low self esteem. Using laser skin care treatments can be an appropriate method for these types of lesions and it does not cause bruising or excessive redness.

How Long Does A Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatment Last?

Depending on the area being treated, the session may last approximately 20 minutes. In general we find that laser removal of age spots is permanent, however people do sometimes see new spots appear as they go back out into the sun. These are new spots forming as a result of sun exposure, not a recurrence of the old, removed spots. The best way to keep free from sun spots is to avoid the sun.

After the treatments for this skin disorder most brown birthmarks will fade with treatment but some recur. These may require additional treatment to keep pigmentation at bay. Brown age spots often fade or disappear with one to two treatments.
